Lady Shaka Boiler Room @ FILTH, Aotearoa 2021.
Lady Shaka is an Afro Pasifika DJ and interdisciplinary artist based in London. Originally from Aotearoa, she is known for using her musical selections to proudly represent her queer identity as a femme queen and her connection to the moana (meaning ocean) and her diaspora.
She is also the director and curator of Pulotu Underworld, a London club night dedicated to celebrating Pacific Artistry and creating safe spaces for Pacific Islanders and QTIPOC.
Lady Shaka made her mark in 2021 with her iconic Boiler Room debut, in which she incorporated Māori poi performance art and Pasifika classics in celebration of her cultural heritage.
Seeing this video made me feel SEEN. A fellow queer, Pasifika & Indigenous woman from so-called Australia (lil me - hi!) watched this during lockdown and felt inspired. She is powerful beyond belief, decolonises spaces everywhere she goes & is a staunch leader in her community.
